The modern legal system is incredibly difficult to navigate. You cannot do it alone, or with misconceptions of how things are going to go down. If you really want to win your case, you’re going to have to carefully follow a couple of basic principles.
Get a Lawyer
Even though it may be a legal possibility, under no circumstances should you represent yourself. There is no faster way to guarantee that you will lose. Lawyers spend years and years in school in order to understand the system that your life depends on. Do your absolute best to find a lawyer that has expertise or experience in criminal cases. If there’s one who’s familiar with your kind of situation specifically – even better. Your hired lawyer will be better than a court-appointed state lawyer nine times out of ten. So, even though it might cost you a little something extra, if it’s something that you can at all afford, you should do it.
Give it Everything You Have
If you are willing to avoid being convicted at all costs, you need to commit to that. That may mean temporarily derailing your career. It may mean using most or almost all your finances. As scary as that can sound, the fact of the matter is that prison time – both the experience itself and all of the resulting legal and social obstacles – can effectively destroy your life. It will be a completely different world. If you want to avoid that, you need to give this case your all. Tell your lawyer everything and listen to their advice. Building a legal defense requires a lot of resources. Give it all the time, money, and effort it deserves.
Keep Going
You’re not going to win if you give up. That is one of the few ways, in fact, to ensure that you don’t. No matter how bleak things look, no matter how the odds or the evidence is stacked up against you, you need to keep going. Explore every option. Even if you have one bad day in the courtroom, you can still come back. Even if you lose a case, you can oftentimes appeal it to try and get a different decision.
This is a complicated and messy process – but you need to be able to depend on yourself to see it through. If you refuse to lose hope, give the case every resource you have, and you get an experienced, trusted lawyer, that is the best you can do. Nothing is guaranteed in the courtroom, but might as well get the best chances possible.
